We Need India

During the American Civil War, when Lincoln contemplated loseing some of the border states to the Confederacy, he said "I should like to have God on our side, but we must have Kentucky." I would like to paraphrase the saviour of the Union and say that in the War on Terror, we should like to have God on our side, but we must have India.

Indian nationials I've talked to always seem to get miffed with the USA, saying something like, we've been fighting the terrorists for 15 years in Kashmir, but the west didn't give a damned, b/c it was just us getting killed. There's a lot of truth in that, and we need to fix things for the following reasons:

  1. It has the manpower to help with troop loads needed over the coming decades. A friend once told me that if all Indians lined the border with Pakistan, they could piss that country off the map.
  2. India has treated it's Muslim population fairly well, which is why that even though India has the largest Muslim population on the planet, none the the Islamofacist terrorists has been Indian.
  3. Now that India is coming online in the global economy, it should do well with it's English speaking population. It needs America as it's partner and customer.
  4. And last but not least, it has a population of 1 billion, is the world's largest democracy, and is a nuclear power. More later...........

Chas,

We agree that the USA and India should be allies. Unfortunately, during the Cold War, India was allied with the Soviet Union and the USA was allied with Pakistan. Old animosities die hard and often get in the way of needed new alliances.

I am looking forward to your further explorations of US-Indian cooperation.

Chas,

OFF_SUBJECT:

Did you see US judges back assisted suicide?

I think we discussed this issue some time ago on Slugger or ATW.

Chas,

BACK ON-SUBJECT:

How do the Indian nationals (presumably Hindus) you talk to explain their co-existence with Islam within the Indian state?

Alan, The Hindus and Muslims there hate each other with a hate that is hard for us to imagine. How else could one explain a mob setting an entire train on fire and burning to death hundreds on board? I forget who did what to who.

Yes, but how do you also explain that there are hundreds of millions who don't kill each other.
You made the point that India has treated it's Muslim population fairly well, which is why that even though India has the largest Muslim population on the planet, none the the Islamofacist terrorists has been Indian. They (the Indian government) must be doing something right, so what is it?

What India is doing right is giving it's population a right to speak out againt the government. That's a far cry from what most Muslims in the Middle East have. It's odd that western democracies give Muslim citizens a right to be heard, whereas Islamic societies do not. A muslim has far more rights in India, Israel, or the USA, than they do in Saudia Arabia, Egypt, or Pakistan. Maybe Egyptians will look to Iraq! had to throw that in :)

No, it's not. That's what we're supposed to be doing here in our western democracies. If you're asking do I prefer western democracy to eastern theocracy, the answer is YES. As you know, I also prefer western democracy to western theocracy.

Alan, Alan, Alan,
You know that's not what I meant. I was contrasting western liberal society with that of police states in the ME. Hell, even Democrats have free speech here! So far.

But you see how easy it is to partially quote someone to give the wrong impression (not that you do that, but some do).
